About Maine Real Estate

Buying Maine Real Estate

If considering a move to Maine, you should take some time to review the following information on demographics, crime statistics, population, schools, and other important facts about Maine real estate.

Maine Population

The most northernmost point in New England, Maine has witnessed a 3.7 per cent population increase in the last few years. This figure accounts for the influx of summer residents who leave for warmer climates during Maine’s winters. The largest cities in Maine are Portland, Lewiston, Bangor, South Portland, Auburn, Brunswick, Biddeford, Sanford, Augusta and Scarborough. The state is not densely populated which is good news for those interested in buying Maine real estate. The capital of Maine is Augusta but the Greater Portland Metropolitan Area is Maine’s most densely populated area accounting for 20 per cent of the state’s total population.

Maine Economy

Maine’s economy is built primarily on agricultural and fishing exports including dairy products, cattle, blueberries, maple syrup, lobster, apples, poultry, eggs and cattle. Industrial products include bottled water, food processing, bio-technology, lumber and shipbuilding. Maine is not a highly industrialized center but there are a few major corporations with offices in the state including L.L. Bean, Fairchild Semiconductor, Delorme, IDEXX Laboratories and Unum. Much of the state’s economy is generated by the tourism industry which continues to thrive especially in the summer and autumn seasons.

Maine Tourism and Recreation

Maine is an outdoor enthusiast’s delight. As one of the New England states, Maine is known for spectacular fall foliage. Tourists engaging on foliage tours will find festivals, great seafood and historic sites and lighthouses along its craggy coast. Outdoor sports abound including fishing, hiking, camping and horseback riding. Maine summers are special for the miles of beaches where families swim, picnic and sun. Winters in Maine are not for the faint of heart but spectacular in their sparse, cold beauty for those who love a brisk Nor’easter. And there is always Spring when the land comes back to life and the tourists begin to wend their way back.

Lakes, forests, history and culture are all part of the Maine landscape and a perfect setting for those interested in buying Maine real estate.
