The largest cities in Maine are Portland, Lewiston, Bangor, South Portland, Auburn, Brunswick, Biddeford, Sanford, Augusta and Scarborough. The state is not densely populated which is good news for those interested in buying Maine real estate. The capital of Maine is Augusta but the Greater Portland Metropolitan Area is Maine’s most densely populated area accounting for 20 per cent of the state’s total population.
Maine Economy
Maine’s economy is built primarily on agricultural and fishing exports including dairy products, cattle, blueberries, maple syrup, lobster, apples, poultry, eggs and cattle. Industrial products include bottled water, food processing, bio-technology, lumber and shipbuilding. Maine is not a highly industrialized center but there are a few major corporations with offices in the state including L.L. Bean, Fairchild Semiconductor, Delorme, IDEXX Laboratories and Unum. Much of the state’s economy is generated by the tourism industry which continues to thrive especially in the summer and autumn seasons.

Maine is an outdoor enthusiast’s delight. As one of the New England states, Maine is known for spectacular fall foliage. Tourists engaging on foliage tours will find festivals, great seafood and historic sites and lighthouses along its craggy coast.
