by on June 23, 2012Laura Leist

After planning a recent wine club party at our home, I’ve had wine on my mind a lot lately. Thinking about our own storage and how our club members store and organize their wine got me thinking that I should share some of these ideas with you.

There are many possibilities for a beautiful and functional wine storage system in your home. To get started, consider your budget, the size of your wine collection, and the amount of space you are able to allot to the project.

Wine Storage and Refrigeration Products

Whether you are an extreme wine enthusiast or simply appreciate a good vino with friends, there is a wine storage solution for you. There are multitudes of wine storage and wine storage refrigeration products. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Wine Racks

Sometimes adding a simple wine rack can add quite a bit of organization and design to your space. There are many different styles, shapes and materials to choose from when looking for a wine storage rack. To narrow down the choices, it is helpful to coordinate with the architecture and hardware finishes currently in your home. Wine racks can be found in most large home furnishing stores as well as online.

Check out how you can turn a large branch into decorative wine storage. Simply drill holes into the branch and secure in place. Visit the website or your local home improvement store for more information on the installation process.

Wine Cellars

Superior Clay’s terra-cotta tiles are a desirable storage method for serious wine enthusiasts. The material maintains the temperature of the wine year round while the design and color of the terra-cotta brings beauty to your collection. The tiles are stackable and come in several shapes for your design convenience.

Your friends will be extremely envious of this simple yet creative design. If you have a closet under a staircase, you can transform it into a gorgeous wine cellar. In the example from HGTV, the homeowners chose to use a glass door and wine racks with the same wood that was already in their home for a very custom look.

Wine Refrigerators

There are many varieties of wine storage refrigerators. The 24 Inch Wide Wine Cooler by Miele is one of many options. It does not take up a lot of valuable space; however it holds 84 bottles of wine!  The wooden racks extend completely, allowing you to unload a full case if needed. There are three temperature zones, which allows you to store champagne and white wine at colder temperatures if you so desire.

Wine Cataloging Systems

Cataloging your wine has become a lot easier and very technology friendly. There are software systems that you can purchase and install for a reasonable price that supply you with all the bells and whistles. There is even an “app” for it!

Software Systems

The Wine Enthusiast website has an inventory system that is top-notch. With your purchase you receive a scanner and the software system. You simply scan your wine when you purchase it and the software stores all valid information pertaining to your specific bottle. Your system receives automatic updates so you can always find the current price and seller. It also provides notices on when to drink your wine for maximum enjoyment.

The Wine Curators website also has a wine cataloging system that incorporates technology in order to keep the inventory process simple.

Bottle Tags

Wine bottle tags are perfect for those who want a simple visual reminder about their favorite wines. Whether or not you invest in an online cataloging system, the labels provide you with another way to make sure each bottle reaches maximum drinking potential.

Figuring out your wine storage and getting it organized can be just as fun drinking it! Enjoy this project and then have a toast to celebrate the completion. Cheers!

Warmly,
