Modern & Contemporary Lighting for the Home
Lighting sure has come a long way since Thomas Edison first invented the light bulb and brought light at the flip of a switch to homes across the nation and around the world. Today, lighting not only brings light into the home, but also can be used to create the perfect atmosphere for any event. In addition, lighting fixtures can add a touch of modern class to any room in the home.
Modern Lighting: Chandeliers and Lamps
Gone are the days of the chandelier dripping with gold and crystal. Today, chandeliers run the gamut from sleek metal frames outlining the simplest of glass sconces to one-of-a-kind art sculptures that hang from the ceiling and sprinkle delicate lighting across a room.
If you're searching for a modern update to your old chandelier, you might consider any of the following:
- a chandelier that uses goose feathers and light bulbs to create the illusion of birds flying overhead
- a circular chandelier featuring translucent acrylic panels through which light shines
- a rectangular brushed-nickel chandelier boasting tall cylinders of frosted glass that house light bulbs.
Of course, for people who want a simpler modern chandelier, very basic options made of curved metal and featuring sconces are available.
These days, even table lamps and floor lamps are benefiting from modern design. No longer must lamps be made from brass or ceramic or topped with dated fabric shades. Modern lamps are often simple and made from a variety of appealing materials, from buffed metal to hand-blown glass.
Modern Lighting: Emergency and Solar Lights
In addition to making your home more beautiful, modern lighting can make your home more energy-efficient and safe for the family. For instance, a family that has young children and/or elderly members might benefit from placing emergency lighting along hallways and stairwells.
Emergency lighting can be as simple as tiny strings of lights attached to the edges of stairs. You can also buy battery-operated lights to place near exits and in hallways, ensuring you'll have light even if the power in your home goes out.
Solar lighting is becoming increasingly popular in the homes of environmentally conscious families. Solar lights placed in the yard can harvest sunlight during the day in order to illuminate dark areas at night. Outdoor solar lights are generally inexpensive and very easy to install.
Solar lights for the outdoors are available in a number of models, including:
- solar border lights
- solar flag pole lights
- solar flood lights
- solar lamp posts
- solar path lights
- solar porch lights
- solar post, pillar and column lights
- solar street lights.
A number of solar lighting options also exist for people who want to bring solar lighting indoors.
Modern Lighting: Track Lighting
In many modern homes, you'll find recessed track lighting. Recessed track lighting is a great way to highlight areas of a room. For instance, you can place these lights over a flat-screen television or above a prized piece of art.
Recessed track lighting can be custom-built and can often be controlled with a dimmer switch. This allows you great control over the atmosphere and lighting of your rooms.
Recessed track lighting easily transforms a plain room into a warm and inviting modern living area.
