Alaska Population

Alaska is a vast expanse of land nearly double the size of Texas. Its 570,380 square miles includes several population centers in distinct areas of the state. Juneau, Alaska’s capital, is located in Southeast Alaska, while the majority of the state’s population including the city of Anchorage, are located in South central Alaska including the southern coastal region. Alaska’s population has increased 5.9 per cent over the last few years and it is ranked 48th out of the 50 states in population although because of its large geographical territory, Alaska remains the least densely populated state in the nation. These indicators are important for those considering Alaska real estate.

Alaska Economy

The main source of economic growth for Alaska is in the area of petroleum extraction. After the oil and gas industry, Alaska’s highest export product is seafood. Agriculture and manufacturing are not significant centers of the state’s economy and most residents are employed in government, transportation and shipping and natural resources. Military bases are also a significant factor in the state’s economy and the biggest source of Alaska’s growth comes from the emerging tourism industry.

Alaska Tourism and Recreation

Outdoor sports and activities reign supreme in Alaska’s northern wonderland. Cross country skiing, fishing, hunting and camping are favorite activities of residents and tourists alike. Sports include dog mushing with the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race from Anchorage to Nome being the most popular annual event. Professional sports teams include the Alaska Aces hockey team and the Alaska Wild football team. Cultural events include the Fairbanks Winter Music Fest, the Anchorage Folk Festival, the World Ice Art Championships in Fairbanks, the Sitka Whale Fest and various exhibits and experiences at the Alaska Native Heritage Center in Anchorage.

If you long for pristine scenery, wilderness adventures, water fun and incredible vistas, then head North to Alaska and check out Alaska real estate.
