About 30 minutes outside of Denver, you’ll find the city of Aurora. It is often considered a suburb of Denver, but Aurora stands on its own as the third largest city in Colorado.

If you’re into fitness and a healthy lifestyle, this place is for you. According to the city’s official website, Aurora is home to 97 parks and over 5,000 acres of open space. Therein you’ll find bike trails, dog parks and a 220-acre sports park with 12 baseball/softball fields and 27 soccer/multi-use fields.

Nicknamed the "gateway to the Rockies," Aurora is an hour and a half drive from Rocky Mountain National Park, but the mountains can be seen throughout the city. Closer by, you can check out Cherry Creek State Park and the Aurora Reservoir, which is a summer spot for boating, windsurfing, swimming and fishing. In the winter, skiers can get to Breckenridge and Keystone Ski resorts in under two hours.

Life in Aurora is pretty laid-back and family-friendly: About 65 percent of households are occupied by married couples and/or parents and children. Some great neighborhoods for families to check out include Saddle Rock Golf Club, Cherry Creek East and Park Villas. The median home value in Aurora is $305,400 and the median rent is $1,695 per month, but you can find cheaper rentals in the city’s high-end apartment complexes.

Besides the great outdoors, two things are big in Aurora: Golf and healthcare. The city is home to 10 golf courses and tons of healthcare facilities, including University of Colorado Health (UCHealth), the Colorado Science and Technology Park at Fitzsimons and the Children’s Hospital Colorado.

If you’re not a golfer or a doctor, you can spend some cash at the city's multiple shopping districts or bet some cash on the ponies at the Arapahoe Park and Mile High Racing facilities. Take in some art at the Aurora Cultural Arts District or buy tickets to see the Aurora Symphony Orchestra. And if you crave city life, hop in the car and you’re in downtown Denver in no time.
