Aurora, IL

Party on, Wayne. This Chicago suburb is where Wayne’s World takes place, and people take that seriously. For the 25th anniversary of the film in 2017, the town held a six-month festival of events. But you don’t have to be a fan of Wayne or Garth to live here.

Located less than an hour from Chicago, Aurora is a great spot for commuters or anyone who likes to be close to the action but wants a little more space and tranquility. Aurora is the second-largest city in Illinois and is part of a community of cities and towns located on the Fox River. It’s geography is unique because it’s actually located in four counties: Kane, DuPage, Kendall and Will counties. Buying in Aurora is pretty cheap compared to renting (which is, perhaps, why 72 percent of residents are buyers). The median sales price of homes is $195,000 and the median rent per month is $1,675. It's a family friendly city with about 80 percent of residents being married.

Aurora is nicknamed the City of Lights. You might be thinking, “Excuse me, that’s Paris.” But, they actually have a pretty good reason to claim the name. In 1881, Aurora became one of the first cities in the country to put in all-electric street lighting. You can check out original houses from that era in the Tanner Historic District. Each year at Christmas, the city really lives up to its name with the Festival of Lights, a massive display of holiday lights. Other big events in town include the Downtown Alive! concert series in the summer and the annual farmer's market and the Aurora Fiestas Patrias Paradee, which celebrates Hispanic culture in the area.

Some must-do things in Aurora: Have dinner or catch some live music at the historic Two Brothers Roundhouse, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, see a show at the historic Paramount Theatre, chow down on some deep dish pizza, take in nature on the Fox River Trail or buy tickets to an outdoor concert at RiverEdge Park.
