The character of Canarsie is exemplified by its slower-paced ambience. This part of New York is reasonably quiet overall, as there tend to be low levels of noise from traffic. Lastly, there is a good amount of greenery in this area; there are approximately 10 public green spaces nearby for residents to check out, such as Paerdegat Basin Park and Gateway, making it very easy to reach them. Moreover, residents will find that most streets have reasonably good tree coverage.

Duplexes are the predominant housing type, representing about half of the dwellings in Canarsie, and the rest of the properties are mainly large apartment buildings, small apartment buildings, and townhouses. House owners are served by a few bus lines, and bus stops are not very far-removed from most homes. On the other hand, driving is a fairly poor medium of transportation in Canarsie since coming across a parking spot is not very easy, and the street infrastructure is not very conducive to driving.
