Chicago, IL

In the Midwest, Chicago is the town to be. Young families will feel at home in Chicago where 45 percent of residents are homeowners and only 37 percent of residents are single (somewhat surprising given the city’s young median age of 34).

The median home price in Chicago is $285,000, but prices are predicted to rise 3.4 percent within the next year. Some of the trendiest up-and-coming neighborhoods include Logan Square, Avondale and Wicker Park. If you have a little money to burn and want to live in style check out real estate listings in Lincoln Park or Gold Coast.

You’ll need to bring two things with you when you move to the windy city: a car (only 27 percent of the city commutes by public transit) and an appetite. Thanks to a burgeoning culinary scene, Bon Appetit magazine recently named Chicago the Restaurant City of the Year for 2017. You’ll find a lot of the city’s trendy, innovative restaurants in West Loop.

Food isn’t the only way to consume culture in Chicago. There’s the Art Institute, tons of public art, theater and architecture to check out. More of an outdoorsy type? Explore the city’s parks (you’ll find “The Bean” at Millennium Park) or head to a ball game at Wrigley Field or Guaranteed Rate Field (Cubs or Sox?). And, of course, you can’t miss the sparkling waters of Lake Michigan. The lake becomes a hub of activity, during the summer, when an action-packed calendar of outdoor festivals and concerts bring the city to life.
