Norfolk, VA

Much like a fine wine (which you’ll find in spades around the city), Norfolk seems to get better with age. Founded in 1682, this second largest city in Virginia is located in the northeast portion of the state, right on the Chesapeake Bay. Residents have quite a lot to brag about, from the city’s enviable proximity to the Bay, multiple rivers and lakes to the mild weather (the average annual high is 68 degrees Fahrenheit, the average annual low is 51 degrees Fahrenheit).

Norfolk’s economy is none too shabby, either. A number of thriving industries are represented in Norfolk, from maritime and transportation to bioscience, medical and education. It’s also a major hub of military and defense, with the largest naval base in the world located here, as well as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and more. Norfolk homes for sale are currently listed at a median price of $199,900. Homes for sale in Norfolk can be found in neighborhoods like Historic Ghent District, NEON Arts District and the Freemason District, among others.

The success of so many important industries is reflected in the recent growth of Norfolk’s downtown, which includes a huge array of dining, shopping and real estate options. Art and history buffs will enjoy the selection of museums and exhibits, including the D’art Center, where one can observe working artists, as well as the Chrysler Museum of Art. Take in a play or other live performance at the Goode Theatre, or enjoy a chuckle or two at the Push Comedy Theater. The Virginia Opera and the Virginia State Company regularly put on world-class shows designed to thrill fans of performance art and music.

Coined “Tree City,” Norfolk is the place for nature lovers, as it boasts 144 square miles of lake, river and Bay shorelines. Time spent in this gem of a city should include a tour of the Norfolk Botanical Garden and its beautifully tended grounds, any number of watersports and a sail down the Elizabeth River aboard a charter ship. Wine enthusiasts should definitely make a pit stop at the Mermaid Winery, the first urban winery of its kind in the state of Virginia.
