The noise levels in this area are low, as the streets are usually calm - however some parts can be quite noisy, especially closer to Bayshore Freeway, Nimitz Freeway or one of the railway lines. Finally, public green spaces, like Overfelt Gardens Park and Flickering Park, are very well-distributed and there are about 20 of them nearby for residents to enjoy, which makes them easy to reach.

There are equal parts owners and renters living in North Valley. Single detached homes are the most common housing type, representing roughly 40% of the dwellings in this neighborhood, whereas the remainder are mainly large apartment buildings, small apartment buildings, and townhouses. The average year of construction for properties in this neighborhood is 1984. This neighborhood has a good choice of housing sizes, ranging from lofts to four or more bedrooms.

In this part of San Jose, locals will usually be able to get to primary schools on foot. Active people will appreciate the reasonably walk-friendly character of this neighborhood; many daily errands can be run on foot. In contrast, the bike is a somewhat poor method of transportation in this part of San Jose as the area is not particularly flat, and the bicycling network is not very comprehensive.
