Portland, OR

Have you ever seen the show Portlandia? Well, then, you’re a bit familiar with Portland. Yes, the show is satirical, but it really does capture the liberal new-age way of living in this young city.

When it comes to living in Portland, renters and young people tend to head toward Southeast Portland and the neighborhoods of Belmont, Hawthorne and Division while Southwest Hills is a ritzier neighborhood, where people buy. Sixty percent of Portland residents are homeowners and the median age of the city is 37. Unfortunately, as in much of the Pacific Northwest, there is a homelessness epidemic in the city of Portland and its residents are passionate about resolving it.

Portland is big on food, beer, biking and art — the makings of a “hipster” city. “Food cart pods” are clusters of food carts around the city where you can sit outside and create a meal from these mobile restaurants; some of the big ones include Alder Street, Fifth Avenue and Third Avenue. If you have a sweet tooth, wait in line for Portland’s famous Salt & Straw fresh ice cream.

There’s also some must-do sightseeing in Portland. Head up to Pittock Mansion or Rocky Butte for unparalleled views of the city and Mount Hood. The Portland City skyline is marked by the towering White Stag sign that shows a deer jumping over the city's name; make sure you snap a picture. Just a couple hours outside Portland, you’ll find some of the most stunning natural landscapes the United States has to offer. Head west to the coast and east to the scenic Columbia River Gorge.
