The character of St. Catherine's Gardens is exemplified by its relaxed atmosphere. Access to public green spaces in the neighborhood, such as Blue River Parkway, is easy and there are a few of them nearby for residents to check out. Most areas in this part of Kansas City are reasonably quiet, as there are generally low levels of noise from traffic - although that is not the case around Interstate 435, US Highway 50 or the railway line.

Single detached homes are the predominant housing type, representing roughly 85% of the dwellings in St. Catherine's Gardens, while the rest are mainly large apartment buildings. Most housing in this neighborhood was constructed in the 1960s and 1970s, during its latest housing boom.
